In a shocking revelation, the Kolkata Police on Wednesday arrested one of its own officers — an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) — for allegedly planning and executing a robbery of ₹2.66 crore. The robbery took place on May 5 inside a moving taxi in the Entally area, shaking public trust and triggering a full-blown departmental probe. The stolen cash was being transported by two employees of a private foreign exchange company, intended for deposit in a state-run bank.
The employees had boarded a taxi from SN Banerjee Road and were heading toward Park Circus. Around 11:45 am, the vehicle was intercepted near Kamardanga by two unidentified individuals who forcibly entered the taxi, looted the massive sum, and fled. Sensing the gravity of the crime, the Detective Department of Kolkata Police immediately took charge of the case. Initial findings hinted at internal involvement, prompting a deeper investigation. Soon, clues pointed toward an ASI of the Kolkata Police, who was arrested on Wednesday for orchestrating the heist.
A senior officer confirmed, “The ASI had not only planned the entire robbery but also guided the perpetrators on timing and location.” The development has left the department red-faced, as it grapples with corruption from within. In total, four individuals have been arrested in the case so far, including an employee of the foreign exchange company. The police believe this was part of a larger conspiracy and are now probing other connections within the gang.
Sources within the police said the robbery had all the signs of a well-planned operation, potentially using internal intelligence about cash movement. Authorities are also verifying if more insiders or officials were involved in the planning and execution of the crime. The investigation continues, with further arrests likely as the police attempt to dismantle what appears to be a networked operation with access to sensitive financial movement data.
